2010 in Review: Favorites (1/3)

Before diving on in to 2011, I wanted to take a look back on 2010 at some favorites. Here’s my first batch:
Brand New Sisters ~ Raleigh Children’s Photographer

Yes, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, you’ve already met these two brand new sisters in previous blog posts. But I’m posting more from their session because A) I’m madly in love with these two, and B) I’d like to take a moment to celebrate the newest sisters I know. Big Sister R and Baby Sister A are very very new to this whole sister gig, but I think they’re already on the right track for a life-long friendship.
Big sister is loving, sweet, and mostly interested in helping with her baby sister, while baby sister is patient, easygoing, and really quite remarkably tolerant of the inadvertant pokes and prods from big sister. I look forward to seeing these sisters grow together!

Twins have an amazing bond. I’m not a twin, but I’m both a daughter of a twin and a mother to twins, and I have seen more times than I could possibly count what an incredible, deep bond twins can have with one another. Sometimes people think that the twin bond only happens with same-sex twins, like my boys or my friend Casey’s twin girls, but the truth is that those boy-girl pairs can have just a close twinbond as any other set of twins.
The reason I bring this up is because I recently was reminded of this upon meeting this darling little pair. Brother and sister, they were happiest when the other was nearby (if not sitting immediately to the right). That twin bond is there, you can see it.
I’m sure there’ll be rocky moments from time to time in their twin relationship (as with any multiples, or even just a pair of singleton siblings), but if they’re anything like my boys, these two will be among the luckiest in the world to have their best friend right by their side all the time.
Catching Up with an Old Friend ~ Raleigh Child Photographer

Lucky me! I got to visit with an old friend, young Miss R, recently. We got together just about a year ago at the Rose Gardens in Raleigh, and I was so very happy to get to see her again this fall.
I tell you, though, it is pretty amazing to see how much she’s grown up in the space of one short year. I swear, next thing I know, I’ll turn around and she’ll be driving.
Awesome with a Capital A

I have so very much to catch up on it is not even funny, and even though I just looked at the calendar and realized that December is mere days from now, I refuse to let myself become overwhelmed and end up accomplishing nothing. So let’s do a little catching-up here, shall we?
Can we talk about Mr. A for a moment? Let’s do, because this kid is Awesome with a capital A. He’s funny, super-smart, quick with a smile, sweet as anything, and endlessly curious about his world.
And he’s also my favorite age: 5. Although to be completely honest with you, my favorite age is pretty much whatever age a wonderful kid is who is in my presence at the moment. But especially so with Mr. Awesome A.
Candy and Light Sabers ~ Halloween 2010

My boys are six and like many many many six-year-old boys, they are Very Big Fans of all things Star Wars. So no one who knows them, has ever met them, or has only seen them briefly in passing on the street was too terribly surprised to hear that they were most definitely completely absolutely eager to dress as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker for Halloween this year.
The fact that toy weapons were a key element probably had some part in their costume selection, of course. Come on, they are six.
Hurry Back, State Fair ~ Raleigh Childrens Photography

We live rather close to the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, and while sometimes it’s inconvenient (oh the traffic) and noisy (fireworks every night, upsetting the dog, who thinks it’s a thunderstorm), we’re always glad when the calendar shows it’s time for the North Carolina State Fair. Sure, the rides are fun and the pig races are hilarious to watch, but in the end, I think it just boils down to this: Fair food rocks our world. Deep-fried Oreos, funnel cake, giant grilled turkey legs, roasted corn on the cob, deep-fried cheesecake, alligator-on-a-stick, and of course corndogs. There’s nothing like a State Fair corndog, y’all.
Yesterday, the State Fair closed up shop for the year, returning our neighborhood, lives, and diets to normal. See you next year, State Fair!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that while we as parents would prefer to have happy smiley photos of our children, a lot of the time, the silly happy photos are just as nice to have. Right? Right.

Flower Girl Sweetness

Maybe it’s because I loved my own stints as a flower girl so much (to the extent that I had my beloved flower girl dresses in my regular Dress-Up rotation well past the age of 8), but I admit I have a weakness for seriously adorable flower girls at weddings. And this little sweetheart, Miss K, ranks right up there in my personal top ten cutest flower girls…which says a lot considering my own flowergirl Mara (who is now in high school – oh my head) typically takes up the top nine slots on that personal list.

Busy! Life is so busy and fun these days, I barely know where to begin. I thought one way to do that would be to share some photos from a recent family session that make me smile all big just to see. Little Man O and his family were such a delight to hang out with for a while one Saturday morning, and when he spontaneously grabbed some leaves and flung them up in the air while jumping at the same time, I could barely contain myself.
Can you remember having this kind of joy? Isn’t it glorious?
